Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is the lymphatic system and what does it do for our bodies?

The lymphatic system is made up of delicate tubes throughout the body carrying lymph fluid, transported to the 700 lymph nodes all over the body via lymphatic vessels. The lymph nodes and other lymphatic structures like the spleen and thymus hold special white blood cells called lymphocytes. These white blood cells form a major part of our bodies’ immune system, providing defence against infections, harmful bacteria and viruses.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD uses gentle, rhythmic, and gliding massage techniques to help move lymph fluid in the direction of the lymph nodes and the heart. This physical stimulation will prevent lymph build up and helps to speed up the detoxification of wastes and toxins from a sluggish lymphatic system.

For the healthy body, lymphatic massage improves circulation by transporting lymph back into the circulatory system and has the potential to enhance your immunity. It is also very beneficial in post operative/ illness conditions that affect your lymphatic system such as post mastectomy related lymphedema. This treatment can help to reduce swelling and prevent complications.
